Chapter 4: This Is Not Opinion, This Is Biology
In the last book, we reviewed “Gifted Hands” by Ben Carson. The author spoke of how he fought his mom all because he wanted to feel among his peers. He wanted to dress as they do, he wanted to be able to buy what they buy.
The urge to belong lies in man, and that is why you will see that fans of a celebrity are quick to form a club even without the consent of the celebrity. Why? This is because they feel they everyone in the club has the same love for the same person, so they feel the need to grow a relationship among themselves.
For another example, TheReformer is an NGO where we don’t pay our members and yet we stick together and achieve goals. This is possible because we all have the same goal and passion of alleviating poverty in Africa through the empowerment of all sorts. We all have the same beliefs which make it easy for us to work together and steer towards our vision successfully.
We are drawn to leaders and organizations that are good at communicating what they believe. Their ability to make us feel like we belong, to make us feel special, safe, and not alone is part of what gives them the ability to inspire us. Those whom we consider great leaders all have the ability to draw us close and to command our loyalty. And we feel a strong bond with those who are also drawn to the same leaders and organizations
As a leader, if your followers do not have the same WHY as yours, then leading them will be impossible or difficult. So ensure you have the WHY in people around you.
